Clarice Kelly Samih
Education Officer

Clarice graduated as Bachelor of Parks and Amenity Management (Hons) from the University Technology Mara (UiTM), in Selangor. She comes from a rural area, in Sabah, where her family and the villagers hunt wildlife for food, and sometimes also as their pets without knowing that the impact from their action can interrupt the ecosystem’s balance and that it can also be against the law.

Clarice did an industrial training with the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) under the Education Unit, and she was mostly concerned about the awareness to protect the wildlife. She became determined to change the perceptions of her family, the villagers, and the people around her, towards wildlife and to promote the negative impact of consuming wildlife illegally. Soon after the training, she became DGFC’s Education Officer and and started the Sunda Clouded Leopard Outreach Programme.

The Sunda Clouded Leopard Outreach Programme is an education programme financed by Yayasan Sime Darby, The Clouded Leopard Project, and Point Defiance Zoo. This is a three year project in collaboration with the Education Unit of the SWD. This programme exposes the pupils of primary school in rural areas to wildlife habitat. The main aim is to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of carnivores and nature conservation among the people living in the wildlife habitat, to reduce poaching, forest encroachment and conflicts between human-wildlife targeting at-risk-families through their children’s education at school. Another expected outcome is to inspire children to learn science, ecology and become future leaders of wildlife conservation, especially in Sabah.

She currently leads all the Education and Awareness Programme  at DGFC.
